The #Wallingford site hosted a panel discussion as part of its ongoing efforts to work with fellow manufacturers and the state’s educational institutions to address the workforce needs of chemical manufacturers. Connecticut’s largest manufacturers have historically been aerospace, submarine and machine tool related with the states vocational education programs geared to fit their needs. Discussion topics included: • Manufacturers and educational institutions partnering with their state representatives to develop legislation and educational programming to meet Connecticut's growing manufacturing workforce needs. • Revising current vocational curriculums to include chemical industry related skill sets. • Joe Schiers reviewed the various skills Evonik looks for when hiring new employees. • Challenges for industry in overcoming the stereotype associated with manufacturing jobs marketing to millennials. The feedback from attendees was excellent with consensus reached on the path forward. The Evonik Wallingford plant participated in the first annual Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce Career Fair. Over 200 job seekers walked the floor at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford Connecticut connecting with over 20 manufacturing exhibitors. The CT. WorkForce Alliance and the CT Department of Labor were in attendance as well to support potential employees. Record crowds attended the annual Celebrate Wallingford festival and Evonik was at the center of it all. Evonik teamed up with its co-located facility Allnex to be Executive sponsor for the event. As lead sponsors, Evonik and Allnex enjoyed a location at the center of the festival that provided high visibility and a steady stream of visitors. Visitors were provided an overview of what the #Wallingford plant produces and how this production is done in a safe and responsible manner. One visitor commented “I didn’t realize there was so much plastic used in the medical field”!
